Question

Carlton & Devore Exercise 18, Sec on 1.2 (link to get the chapter is posted next to his homework in ccle). An individual is presented with three different glasses of cola, labeled C, D, and P. He is asked to taste all three and then list them in order of preference. Suppose the same cola has actually been put into all three glasses. What are the simple events in this ranking experiment, and what probability would you assign to each one? What is the probability that C is ranked first? What is the probability that C is ranked first and D is ranked last?

Explanation / Answer

A) C ,D P ARE EACH HAVE TO BE ASSIGN RANK 1,2,3 AND THE PROBABILITY WILL BE 1/3 THAT EACH WILL BE ASSIGN ANY RANK

TOTAL EVENTS WILL BE IN ORDER OF C,D,P ARE (1,2,3),(2,1,3),(3,2,1),(2,3,1),(1,3,2),(3,1,2)

B) PROBABILITY THAT C WILL BE RANKED 1ST = 1/3 AS THERE ARE 3 CHOICES SO CHANCES ARE 1/3

C) PROBABILITY THAT C WILL BE RANKED 1ST = 1/3 FROM ABOVE

AND PROBABILITY OF D BE RANKED LAST = 1/3*1/2 = 1/6
