Question

Carl is traveling 2000 miles in his van. He has been keeping track of the total number of gallons of gas he has bought since he started Make a scatter plot of his data. Draw a line of best fit on your graph and write the equation for your line. Use your equation or your graph to estimate how many gallons he will nave used when he arrives at his destination. A furniture dealer thinks men tend to select easy chairs primarily on comfort and women tend to choose the chair based on appearance. He does a survey asking people what they look for in choosing an easy chair. He classified their answers as comfort or appearance characteristics. There were 200 men who responded and SI gave an appearance characteristic. There were 250 women and 108 gave an appearance characteristic. Do you think the evidence supports his conclusion about men and women? Show your work and explain your reasoning. Decide whether each of these tables represents a linear function and explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

. The furniture dealer thinks that men tend to select easy chairs primarily for the comfort these offer and that women tend to choose chairs for their appearance. In a survey conducted by the furniture dealer , 200 men and 250 women reponded. 81 of the 200 men gave an appearance characteristic as the primary reason for selection. If we assume that all the respondents gave either appearance characteristic or the comfort characteristic as the reason for choice, then 200-81= 119 men out of 200, i.e. 59.5 % men chose chairs for the comfort characteristic. Further, 108 out of 250 women gave appearance characteristic as the reason. Thus, 250-108 = 142 women out of 250, i.e. 56.8 % women gave comfort characteristic as the reason for choice. It is now clear that the furniture dealer’s thinking regardging men basing their choice primarily for the comfort characteristic is correct. However, the furniture dealer’s thinking regardging women basing their choice primarily for the appearance characteristic is incorrect.
