Rroblem A lab has three cabine ts, each with two drowers. The first cabinet has NPN transistors in each drawer; the second cabinet hos PNP transistors in each drower; he mird drawer has NPN transistors in one drawer and PNP transistors in the other drawer, We randomly select a cabinet with equal probability, and withdraur a transistor from one of the two drawers with equal probability. @ What is the probability that an NPN transistor will be selected? O If an NPN transistor is selected, what is the probability that it came from the third cabinet?

Explanation / Answer

a)probability of NPN transistor =P(first cabinet and NPN transistor+second cabinet and NPN transistor+third cabinet and NPN transistor)=(1/3)*0+(1/3)*1+(1/3)*(1/2) =1/3

therefore b) probability of third cabinet given NPN transistor selected

=P(third cabinet and NPN transistor)/P(NPN transistor) =(1/3)*(1/2)/(1/3) =1/2
