Question
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults spend at least 3.75 hours each week in physical activity. A random sample of 200 people consisted of 150 adults and 50 adolescents. The number of weekly hours spent exercising is summarized in the following boxplots. Adults Adolescents 2 4 Weekly Exercise Hours Is there any indication that the variability in exercise hours is different for adults than it is for adolescents? Briefly explain how you use the boxplots to answer this questionExplanation / Answer
Explaining the boxplots:
a) Adults :
Minimum: (Approx) 0.25
1st Quartile : (Approx) 1.5
Median : 2
2nd Quartile : (Approx) 2.5
Maximum : (Approx) 3.8
b) Adolescents :
Minimum: (Approx) 2.25
1st Quartile : (Approx) 3.7
Median : 5
2nd Quartile : (Approx) 6.25
Maximum : (Approx) 8.2
From the box plot data, we see that:
For adults -->
the range of exercise hours is: 0.25 hours to 3.8 hours
The middle 50% (Q1 to Q3) does around 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours.
For adoloscents -->
the range of exercise hours is: 2.25 hours to 8.2 hours
The middle 50% (Q1 to Q3) does around 3.7 hours to 6.25 hours.
So yes, the variability in exercise hours is definitely different for adults and adoloscents as seen by the box plot data.
Cheers!
