Question
Can someone help me with this question please?
Statistics is subject of collecting concepts, principles, and methods that help us learn about the world. One of the main goals of this course is to enable you to discover that statistics can be used as an important tool in daily life. You may find statistics useful if it helps learn more about interesting things around you. It is known that one can learn better by analyzing data that one has collected rather than data provided by others. So, this week, our focus is on a "question of interest"- why to find the answer to your question is so important to you? Is it substantially important to the others as well !! , if so who are the stakeholders of the study. You may read about your idea and learn how the other researchers made a conclusion about it (literature review). This topic is going to be a start of our upcoming discussions for next few weeks when we will elaborate and complete week after week on your question of interest till to the point that we are going to have a clear idea of your research that is conducted base on this question . Finally, you do share the result to the group as a brief research project/proposal by the end of the semester.
However this week, please just focus on the following steps.
1) Why this question is important to you?
2) what other researchers might think of your question of interest?
3) Identify: objective(s) of the study, variables, population of interest, level of measurement, stakeholders of the study, and etc.
4) Develop a survey that consists of 4 to 6 questions where the questions must directly align with the objectives.
Explanation / Answer
(1) An interesting question that is very important to me as a student, is whether there exists any correlation between the student's academic performance as measured by GPA(Grade point Average) and student's salary after 1 year of graduation from college. This question is important to me for following obvious reason : If I can answer this question, I would get an idea as to how much hard work should I put in my studies in order to achieve certain level of salary in future..
(2) At this time, when I have framed my question of interest, I need to explore whether some researchers have already attempted to explore this question or not. This can be checked by doing thorough literature survey. While doing literature survey, we may find that some researchers have reported that there indeed exists strong positive correlation between academic performance and salary, while some other researchers might conclude that there is no significant correlation between theses two variables.
(3) Objective of Study : To determine whether a student's academic performance measured by GPA is correlated with his/her salary after 1 year of graduation and also quantify the extent of correlation if any.
Variables : There are 2 variables in this study --- 1. Student's GPA 2. Student's Salary after 1 year of graduation.
Population of interest: Set of all the alumni of the college, for whom atleast 1 year time has elapsed since they passed out.
Level of measurement : Both the variables (GPA and salary) assume data which is of Ratio type. Hence the level of measurement for both the variables is Ratio.
Stakeholders of study : Since all the current college students will be really eager to know the result of this study, they are the stakeholders.
(4) Follwoing Survey Questions can be asked to a sample of alumni :
1. What was your overall GPA in college?
2. What was/is your salary at the end of 1 year after passing out from the college ?
3. Which all factors, other than the college academic performance, have affected your salary at the end of 1 year post passing out ?
4. Do you really think that the college academic performance impacted your salary level?
5. Would you wish that you could go back to college days and improve your academic performance in order to progress in your current career status?
