Sedimentary Rocks Identification Assignment.

For Part 1, you need to fill in a chart that identifies the sedimentary rocks rock type, composition, textures, sedimentary rocks name, and other observations of the sedimentary rocks. I have provided pictures/photos of the sedimentary rocks below that need to be identified. Also, I have provided a Sedimentary Rock classification chart/table. The chart that needs to be filled in is provided below.

Note: You must find out what the name of the Sedimentary rock is from the sample letter.

Explanation / Answer

Explanations:

All the above rocks are sedimentary in nature which are formed by the deposition of sediments and subsequent cementation process at the Earth surface on in the water bodies.

Quartz: It is a type of clastic (which are composed of fragments or clasts) sandstone It is a course-grained sandstone, water can penetrate easily.

Shale: It is a fine grained sedimentery rock composed of mud. Clay, quartz, calcite are found here.

Coquina: mainly abraded shell or shell fragments found here.

Chert: fine-grained rock of quartz.

Conglomerate: It is a course-grained rock with subangular pebbles.

Marble: it is composed of recrystallized carbonated rock

G Clastic mainly quartz grains weathered from other rocks mostly sand (1/16 mm-2 mm Quartz Sandstone porous in nature H Clastic mainly rock and mineral fragments weathered from other rocks mostly clay (<1/256 mm) Shale 70% of Earth rock is shale I Biogenic mainly shell or shell fragments(not visible through naked eyes), fine-grained calcite, effervesces in acid >= 2mm Coquina common in the marine environment J Chemical mainly varieties of quartz, like Chalcedony, flint, opal etc microcrystalline Chert very hard K Clastic mainly rock and mineral fragments weathered from other rocks mainly gravel (>2mm) Conglomerate rounded part can be minerals or different rocks L Chemical mainly carbonate minerals (dolomite/calcite) fine-grained Marble used commercially Other Observations
