In an anonymous survey 34 students reported the hours they studied for a Selecet one statistics final exam. The histogram below shows the results of the suvey points Time spent studying 0-2 2-4 4-6 68 8-10 10-12 12-14 14-16 16-18 18-20 20-22 Hours Which statement below is most accurate in describing the center of the distribution of study hours? OThe median should be used to describe the center, because the values on the horizontal axis can be split exactly in the middle. C. The median should be used to describe the center because, since the data is skewed, the middle outcome may more accurately describe a typical value in the distribution O The mean should be used to describe the center because the data is roughly symmetric. OThe mean should be used to describe the center because it may produce a decimal value, which is more accurate than the median. A. B. C. D.

Explanation / Answer

The correct option is B as the histogram showed that the distribution of the data is skewed.

As we can see from the histogram that the data contains outliers. In case of outlier mean is very poor measurement of central tendency because it is affected by the extreme values. E.g. the mean of the data 3, 2, 2, 3, 50 is = 12. It is not very good measurement as we can see that there are two 2's and two 3's but in the presence of 50 the mean becomes so high. But the median = 3 is a good measurement for central tendency. So in case of skewed data we should use median. So, option B is correct.
