Question
Trying to solve the following problem. In 1974, there were 86,821 people fromother countries whoimmigrated to the state of California. In 2004, the number ofimmigrants was 252,920. a. If the change in foreign immigration to California isconsidered to be liner, write an equation expressing the number ofimmigrants, y, in terms of the number years after 1974, x. b. Use your result in part a to predice the foreignimmigration to California in the year 2014. This is what I've got so far. y = mx + b (1974, 86,821) (2004, 252,920) m = (y1 - y2) (x1 - x2) m = 252,920 - 86,821/2004 - 1974 m 166,099 / 30 not sure how to solve the next portion after this....or ifthis is even correct....Please help. we know that in 1974 there were 86,821 and in 2004 there were252,920 so we can say that over (2004-1974 = 30) years there were(252,920-86,821=164,099) immigrants which gives us 166,099/30 = 5536.63 immigrants per year **I would use the fraction in the equation since we can nothave .63 of a person and if we round it would not be asaccurate
so we can make an equation like so:
y = (166,099/30)x + 86,821
you can test by putting in the 30 for x and we get the 252,920back
if we want the immigration numbers for 2014 just take thedifference of 2014 and 1974 and plug in for x.. so we get y = (166,099/30)*40 + 86,821 = 308,286.33 ...but again since we can't have a fraction of a person in this casewe would throw away the rounding rules and say we got 308,286immigrants.
Enjoy :)
