Question

Math 112 Section Directions Show all work, and answer each question that is asked. Explanations should be given in complete sentences. All graphs should be drawn accurately on this sheet, and be fully labeled. H(t) =-0.0004x2 + 2.59x + 500 1. A motorcyclestunt rider jumped across the Snake River. The path of his motorcycle was given , where is measured in feet above approximately by the function the river and is the horizontal distance from his launch ramp. How high above the river was the launch ramp? What was the rider's maximum height above the river, and how far was the rider from the ramp when he reached the maximum height? (Round answers to two decimal places if needed)

Explanation / Answer

H(t) = -0.0004x^2 + 2.59x + 500

to find how high above the river was launch ramp

plug x = 0

H(t) = -0.0004(0)^2 + 2.59(0) + 500

H(t) = 500

therefore, launch ramp was 500 feet above te river

2) maximum height is the vertex of the function

x = -2.59 / 2 (-0.0004)

x = 3237.5

maximum height = -0.0004(3237.5)^2 + 2.59(3237.5) + 500

maximum height = 4692.56 feet

and the rider was 3237.5 from the ramp to reach maximum height
