Question

Converting between equivalent values of fraction, decimal, and percent is an important skill. Given the percent, write the equivalent fraction and decimal, round as directed.

Fraction: 1/3

6a. Using a sentence or two, explain how to convert from fraction form to equivalent decimal form?

6b. Show the decimal form of 1/3 using three periods (dots), called an ellipsis, to indicate the non-terminating repeating decimal.

6c. Show the decimal form, rounded to the thousandths place. Using a sentence or two, explain how to round this number.

6d. Using a sentence or two, explain how to convert from decimal form to equivalent percent form of the number?

6e. Show the percent form and round this to the nearest hundredth of a percent. Using a sentence or two, explain how to round this number.

Explanation / Answer

6a) Equivalent fraction form = 1/3; To convert to decimal form, divide '1' by '3' and we get 1/3 = 0.333333.....
Thus 1/3 in fractional form when converted to decimal form becomes 0.3333

6b) 1/3 in decimal form is 0.333.... the '3' after the decimal keeps on repeating till infinity and hence is called the non-terminating but repeating part of the decimal; Thus 1/3 = 0.333....

6c) In decimal form 1/3 is 0.333333.... ; Rounding to the thousandth place means having 3 decimal palces after the point; = 0.333 (but if the fourth decimal is >5) then the decimal is rounded off to the thousandth palce by increasing the third decimal place by one. (for example 0.6628~= 0.663)

6d) If the decimal form of a number is given, multiply it by 100 and add a "%" sign to get it in percentage form.
For 0.33333 in percentage form: 0.3333*100= 33.3333... = 33.33% (percentages aer usually expressed upto 2 decimal places)

6e) 33.33333...% has to be rounded off to te hundredth palce, here we appraoch just like we did in '6c' part
To express as a hundredth of a percent, take upto 3 decimal places after the point. If the third decimal palce is >5 then increase the second decimal pace by 1 else if it is <5 keep the second decimal place as it is:
33.333% ~= 33.33% upon rounding off to nearest hundredth of a percent;
