Independent vs. Dependent Variables
Read the following case study and then discuss the given questions in your post:

Students at a university were assigned an experiment that would examine whether gender has an impact on technology usage. Part of the experiment involved determining students' familiarity with using different forms of technology. In order to determine how familiar students were with using online log-in systems, the experimenters decided to time how fast students could log on to the online course. The times for students were recorded and categorized by whether the students in the sample were male or female. The experimenters then used that data to decide if there was a difference between male and female performances.

Discuss these questions in your post:

Discuss whether the resulting sets of data would represent either dependent or independent samples. Why? Be sure to support claims with examples.

Discuss some of the characteristics that determine a sample type as being dependent and independent.

Discuss why it may be important as a forecaster to know whether a sample is independent or dependent.

Explanation / Answer

Discuss whether the resulting sets of data would represent either dependent or independent samples.

in the experiment we have both dependent and independent variables.

dependent variables : time to log on

independent variables : gender of a student..

moreover here the sample is dependent. as logon time is dependent on gender.

examples. suppose a male student logon in 24 sec and female logon in 38 sec.

so there is differeence the logon time due to gender.

Discuss some of the characteristics that determine a sample type as being dependent and independent.

in the sample taken as for experiment , the variables are chosen for experiment are in such way that, one variable influances the other one. Here the gender influances the logon time. hence gender isindependent and logon time is dependent.

Discuss why it may be important as a forecaster to know whether a sample is independent or dependent.

aIf the sample dependent so we need to form the probabilitys of each with the help of dependent varible.

but is samples are independent then we dont need any variable to fing the probability.
