Question

Please briefly explain how you arrived at your answer

The Carboniferous is the term used in much of the world for one period in the Paleozoic Era. Use internet or book resources to determine why geologists coined that term for the period. They did so because: Sedimentary rocks of that age throughout the world contain abundant coal, which is made of carbon. The igneous rocks erupted during that period are unusually rich in the element carbon, providing a distinctive property that allows identification of Carboniferous rocks around the world. The first rocks of that age were discovered in Carbon County, Illinois, and the period was named for the location of this discovery. The absolute age range of the period was determined through application of carbon dating.

Explanation / Answer

Carboniferous means "coal-bearing" and derives from the Latin words carbo (coal) and ferre (to carry)
