Question
I need help with this project plz. Brainstorm some ideas and also need a good report on this. Everything's included in the following pics. Thanks a lot im advance
Team Project 1: Projectile Design Competition Due: See deadlines below OBJECTIVE: Design and build a device which can launch a golfball to any specified distance between 5ft and 15ft. MATERIALS Any free materials can be used except living things and anything with a power source One golf ball will be provided to each team at the start of the project. If lost, 10% will be deducted from your final grade. RULES (Figure 1): 1. The distance of the target will be revealed the day of the competition. 2. The target consists of three concentric circles with diameters of 6", 12" and 18 3. Teams will have 15 minutes before the competition begins to set up their device based on the design distance 4. Students will be allowed 1 test before the actual competition 5. The maximum dimension for each device is 12" x 12" x12" at its full deployment 6. All parts of the device must be the full distance away from the target 7. Each team will be given 3 attempts to hit the target 8. Teams will have 2 minutes between attempts to readjust the device 9. The instructor has the ultimate interpretation of the rules. 15 maximum Design Distance 5' minimum Device Figure 1: Layout of Design Testing PERFORMANCE SCORING: 1. Points are awarded based on the landing location: a. 6" circle: 50 pts b. 12" circle:45 pts c. 18" circle: 40 pts d. Outside the target but between 5' and 15': 25 pts e. Outside of defined design range of 5 -15:0 pts 2. 5pts will be deducted for every inch larger than the maximum allowed dimensions.Explanation / Answer
Well I made one of these in high school, as a hobby thing, but it says it should be made with free materials so this is going to be a little tough given it has to have a 1feet x 1feet x 1feet measurement. Mine involved motors and stuff.
All you need to take care of is that you have to have something that
Now all I can think about is a rubber band or that kind of stretchable things to do that. A catapult arrangement is nice to but it takes too much space, so that's a no-go.
Well think of kind of a crossbow arrangement on a 450 elevated release mechanism, but you have to do a lot of pre testing because rubber band doesn't obey hook's law in real world.
Make the base like a ramp of 450 with cardboards and attach one or two reliable elastic band onto two side of its top edge. Now make sure of two things, if you stretch the rubber band every time for a fixed point (preferably near the base) the rubber band's working length must vary to achieve different length. Attach a small piece of slidable holder for the ball to go in.
Here comes the testing, you have to test with a large number of repetitions to get your arrangement fairly accurate. The key features that makes the system "real world" and not ideal physics is,
But here statistical physics comes to rescue. A fairly large number (~50-60) of testing with the same parameters gives a fair nature of the system. So test it a lot, but don't wear out the joints or the band. Test with a lot of elastic thing to find the most reliable ones to use. A 450 angle ensures the maximum range of the golf ball.
Comment on this for further clarity, if needed.
