Question
Planning and preparation are required for team sport athletes who travel to competitive events. You are in charge of arranging the restaurant stops and packing the team coolers for an upcoming trip. The women’s soccer team will be traveling from Evanston, Illinois, to Lincoln, Nebraska, for a weekend tournament.
What is a good recommendation for one restaurant stop along the travel route, as well as a restaurant where the team will eat on Saturday evening in Lincoln? Name each restaurant and the reason for your selection.
Make a list of items you would pack in the team cooler. Explain why you are choosing each of these items.
Explanation / Answer
A restaurant that has food with adequate high carbohydrate meals to keep glycogen stores full and Low high fat proteins such as cheese and peanut butter as they take a long time to empty from the stomach and will slow down the players. also the food should have high glycemic index foods if its during or after exercise (such as glucose, potatoes, bagels, raisins, oatmeal, sugar) but since its traveling period, low to moderate index foods before exercise (pasta without sauce, chocolate milk, PowerBar, green beans) would be good. this is to avoid a "sugar crash" that can occur when blood sugar rapidly rises and then falls again.
Before the game 6-8 oz. of lean protein – Grilled chicken, turkey, or fish. 1.5 cups of high-fiber rice/pasta and at least 2 cups of vegetables should be taken in the evening.
the cooler should have ice bags incase as a first aid. should have water bottles and beverages with enough calories but not high sugar. snacks like chocolates
