Question

The following scenario is the basis for questions

A researcher predicts that political views (liberal, moderate, conservative) is likely to influence a person’s views on support for the elderly (“very supportive”, “somewhat supportive” or “not at all supportive”).

Part A:Based on the scenario described above, what is the null hypothesis this researcher must test?

Part B:Based on the scenario described above, what is the appropriate test of statistical significance to run to assess the relationship between these two variables?

Part C: Based on the scenario above, if the researcher’s results show a p-value of 0.042, what does that tell her about the null hypothesis and the statistical significance of her results?

Explanation / Answer

Part A: Here the null hypothesis that researcher must test is:

H0 = Political views(liberal, moderate, conservative) have no influence on person’s views on support for the elderly (“very supportive”, “somewhat supportive” or “not at all supportive”).

Alternative hypothesis is:

HA = Political views influence a person’s views on support for the elderly

Part B: For nominal and ordinal data, Chi Square is used as a test for statistical significance.

Part C:  If the researcher’s results show a p-value of 0.042, it tells to reject the null hypothesis. The claim will be statistically significant at 95% confidence interval as p value is less than 0.05.
