Question
All outdoor recreation organization tested two models of camp stoves to determine which one heats water faster, by measuring the time a random sample of each stove took to raise the temperature of 2 quarts of water from 50 degree F to boiling (at sea level). The following results were obtained. Model 1: x_1 =11.4 min s_1 = 2.5 min n_1 = 10 Model 2: x_2 = 9.9 min s_2 = 3.0 min n_2 = 8 Conduct an independent samples t test to determine if there is evidence that Model 1 takes significantly longer than Model 2 to heat water. Use a significance level alpha = 0.10.Explanation / Answer
here
from above degree of freedom v=((s12/n1+s22/n2)2/((s12/n1)2/(n1-1) +(s22/n2)2/(n2-1))=~13
also std error of differnce = (s12/n1+s22/n2)1/2 =1.3229
hence test stat t=(X1-X2)/std error =1.1339
for which at 13 degree of freedom p value =0.1387
which is higher then 0.1 level ; hence we can not reject null hypothesis that both means are equal.
And therefore can not accept that Model1 takes longer time
