Question
Part A
For each of the following classes of proteins, give two examples of specific proteins. You may use any available resources: later chapters in the text, your notes from other classes, or the Internet.
Sort each molecule into the appropriate bin.
Explanation / Answer
The following classes of proteins contain the examples as well as classification of above mentioned proteins
Enzymes examples-Amylase (causes hydrolysis of starch into sugars), Lactase (breaking down of lactose to glucose and galactose), Hexokinase and DNA polymerase.
Structural protein example-Karatin (Found in hair, horns, beaks), collagen (found in skin and connective tissue)
Motility proteins examples- kinesin and dyenin proteins important in mitosis and meiosis spindle formation and movement of vesicles between subcellular organelles like mitochondria and Golgi apparatus. Actin and Tubulin are a class of motility proteins
Regulatory proteins examples-proteins that regulate gene expression such as transcription factors TFIID, TFIIB, glucagon that regulates blood sugar levels and lac repressor
Transport proteins-glucose transporter proteins such as GLUT, potassium channels
Hormonal proteins-Insulin (glucose metabolism hormone), Growth hormone (Found in pituitary glands for growth)
Receptors examples-Acetylcholine receptor, glucochorticoid receptor and Insulin receptor
Defensive proteins-Antibodies IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD and protease inhibitors
Storage proteins examples-ferritin (it stores iron) and gliadin (Contained in wheat breakdown into amino acid peptides)
