Child Mortality in relation to per capita GDP and female literacy rate

In this worksheet you are given cross-sectional data for 64 countries on child mortality(CM) and a few other variables - FLR female literacy rate and PGNP = per capita GNP in 1980.

CM = Child mortality, the number of deaths of children under age 5 in a year per 1000 live births.

FLF = Female literacy rate, percent.

PGNP = per capita GNP in 1980.

We are going to estimate the following regression

CMt=B + B FLFt + B PGNPt + Ut

a) Before you perform the regression model make a personal prediction about the expected signs of the parameters B2 and B3 and justify your answers

b) Estimate the regression model in Excel

c) Interpret the estimated parameters (intercept term, B and B). Not just the sign but also the whole value of the parameter

d) Comment on R² Explain what means about the model and also if is an acceptable value for what it express

e) Comment on the statistical significance of each of the estimated parameters , Are the variables significant at a 5% level of significance?

F) Is the model significant at a 5% level of significance? Justify your answer

Explanation / Answer

Here' are answers to the question:

a) Just be looking at the data we can see that FLR has a negative movement with CM.

PGNP' movement with CM seems indecisive.

b) CM = FLR + PGNP

CM = 263.64 -2.23159*FLR - .00565*PGNP

c) For 1 unit rise in Female Literacy Rate (FLR) the child mortality decreses by 2.23 dealth per thousand

For 1 unit rise in PGNP the CM decreases by 0.00565 units.

d) R2 square of .707 means that 70.7 of the varinace in data is been explained by the 2 variables.

e) The significance level of FLR and PGNP are very less .05 ( at 1.64*E-15 and .0065). Hence, both the variables are significant in the equation.

f) The regression equation' p value is 5.12 E-17 which is almost 0. Hence, smaller than the cutoff value of .05. The linear regression eauation is therefore significant.
