Question
Describe what happens to the power of a study for each condition. Please provide a sentence or for each explaining why power changes.
a. The sample size of a study is increased.
b. A researcher changes their type I error rate from = .05 to = .01.
c. The effect size of the study is increased by exaggerating levels of the IV.
d. A researcher increases the standard deviation in their sample (i.e., their sample has more variability)
e. A researcher changes their hypothesis test from one-tailed to two-tailed.
Explanation / Answer
(a) If the sample size is increased, power of the test increases because we have more evidence for or against the hypothesis.
(b) If alpha is decreased, beta will subsequently increase, so the power of the test decreases.
(c) If the effect size is increased, the power is decreased as less evidence is for or against the hypothesis.
(d) If the standard deviation increases, the data is more spread, and so the results are less reliable, power is decreased.
(e) There is no change in the power if the hypothesis is changed from one-tailed to two-tailed.
