Question
Stuck on these few homework problems.... help would be appreciated :) A. A council must be assembled of 5 people that must be selected from 5 men and 8 Women How many ways can this selection be done if there are AT LEAST 4 women on the council? What is the chance or probability of selecting AT LEAST 4 women on the council? B. In a college, 30% of the men and 20% of the women are studying math. 45% of the students are women. If a student selected at random is found to be studying something other than math, what is the probability they are a woman? C. Show and explain in an essay and diagrams how 2 independent events (X and Z) that occur with nonzero probabilities cannot be mutually exclusive.Explanation / Answer
A) Number of ways in which selection can be made such that at least 4 women are there on the council
= 8C4x5C1 + 8C5
= 406
Total ways of selection = 13C5 = 1287
P(at least 4 women on council) = 406/1287 = 0.3155
B. P(woman | studying other than math) = P(woman and studying other than math) / P(studying other than math)
= 0.45x(1-0.2) / ((0.45x0.8) + (0.55x0.7)
= 0.483
