Question

A medical study of I000 people produced the following data: age had asthma dian have asthma Total under 18 693 921 1000 total 79 For example, 25 people had asthma and were under 18. A person in the study is selected at random. A: the person has asthma A: the person is a minor (under 18 years old 3a. What is the probability that arandomly selected person with asthma is a minor? 3b. What percentage of minors have asthma? 3e. Based on your answers to 3a and 3b, is the incidence of asthma among minors greater than in the general population, less than in the general population, or the same? Of Ba and 3b, which is directly relevant to this question? Math 104:03, Spring 2017, Assignment 8 3d. If you find out that someone has asthma but know noching else about the person. does that make you more likely or less likely to think that heishe is a minor? Which twoprobabilities must you compare in order to answer this question

Explanation / Answer

Total people studied = 1000

total number of people have asthama = 79

totalnumber of people did not have asthama = 921

3a)

probability that a randomly selcted person with asthama is minor =

total number of minors = 235

total of people has asthama = 79

minor who had asthama = 25

probability = 25 / 79 = 0.3164

3b)

percentage of minore having asthama = minors having asthama / total minors * 100

                                                      = 25 / 253 * 100 = 9.8814%

3c)

percentage of minore having asthama = 9.8814%

percentage of non minors having asthama = 54/747 * 100 = 7.22%

Hence we can say that the incident of asthama among minors is greater than the general population.

3b is directly relevent to this question.

3d)

probability of being minor if having asthama = 0.3164

probability of non-minor having asthama = 0.6836

It makes us less likely to think that he is a minor as the probabilty of the person being minor if having having asthama is less.
