Question
Complete the full hypothesis testing procedure to determine if students at TCC watch less television than Americans in general. Use the fact that Americans watch 4.8 hours of television per day with a standard deviation of 1 hour per day. There were 22 students with a combined total hours of tv watched of 99.25 hours Include the following in your report: a) Hypotheses using correct notation b) type of test (left, right, two-tailed) , distribution used (normal or t) c) level of significance, choose one based on how serious the study is
Explanation / Answer
Part a)
Null Hypothesis (Ho): µ 4.8
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): µ < 4.8
Part b)
This is left-tailed test.
Here population standard deviation is given so this is normal distribution.
Part c)
Level of significance is the probability of type I error. Type I error occur when by mistake we conclude that students at TCC watch less television than Americans general but where as it is not less. We choose the level of significance as 5% based on the seriousness of the probability of type I error.
