For purposes of this discussion board, you are asked to select and visit two retail stores in the U.S. in your area (Indiana). It would be best if you picked two outlets you feel are quite different in so far as the store “ image” (i.e., a high-end retailer and a value chain).

Owners of retail stores often believe that “atmospherics” – i.e., getting people in the mood – makes them more likely to buy. Do you feel that the store atmospherics in each store would influence your purchase behavior? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

A Retail store is a business that presents a selection of goods and offers to trade or sell them to customers for money or other goods

In 19th century , shops transitioned from ' single function' shops selling one type of good , to the department store where a large variety of goods were sold

But in Modern days , customer focus is more transferred to online shopping, World wide people order products from different regions and online retailers deliver their products to theirs homes and offices

As , online shopping came in to existence , the option of opening a retail store is quite challenging and it has to be unique in terms of colors , materials and everything

In a recent trip to New York City, Retail Dive visited two stores that have created unique shopping experiences by using interactive technology, creative merchandising, and exclusive events.

Birchbox and Story—the former emerging from an online-only concept, the latter inspired by the monthly concept of a magazine—seem to have found success with this new type of physical store.

Selection of offline Retail store :

As a part of selection criteria for opening a retail store , here are the things or steps ,I followed

Assuming i have got so many applications for granting the store to open, Here are the things i was impressed with and gave a nod for two

1.)The atmposhere and ambience was cool and fantastic , As they have choosen different theme based ambience

when we enter inside , we get a feel of entering in to new mood , which enhances the user experience

There are some ways which store colors can influence shoppers ,

Colors in a store format can create different emotions and store retailers can use that.

Store persons used Brown , Orange and yellow , which according to physchology plays an integral part when purchasing

2.) Product Displays: As sense of smells are targeted ,they opt for freshly baked bread and roasting chickens , how fresh the produce is and makes you feel hungry.

Supermarkets exploit human nature to increase their profits

They followed a model 'planogram' , which indicates the placement of retail products on shelves in order to maximise sales

They followed the theory ' Number of Facings' the more visible a product, the higher the sales are likely to be.

3.)Lighting Fixtures:They used energy efficient technology for store purpose , as lighting plays a key role in creating the drama excitement

They provided a visual hirerachy to direct the shopper to must see items and specials

They have taken all precautions and they used some latest methodlogies like CRI ( Color Rendering Index) and Correlated color temperature , thus makes the lighting falls on the products

4.)Store Personnels :I was pretty much impressed with the selection of store persons as they followed personality tests , cognitive ability tests , and finally they have kept uniform code for all the employees with names printing on their back.

Apart from that , they all were well trained and they adhere to the code of conduct for that particular stores

5.) Technology Equipment: The store has used easypay touch devices , which was unique feature used by Apple stores

As the retail stores have lot of people around , the staff was equipped with easypay devices and automatic check out will be made at that instance, instead of standing out in long queues
