ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS (double click this cell to edit): The correlation is medium-strong (-0.32), which means there could be a noisy near relationship here. Looking at the scatter plot, is it a good idea to fit a line to this data? Refer to the list of assumptions made by linear regression above. ANSWER HERE: Notice that the relationship seems to alter dramatically around 1980 and again after about 2000. Describe one difference that is apparent in the data before 1980 and after 1980. Describe one difference that is apparent in the data before and after 2000. ANSWER HERE: Notice that the number of movies with metacritic scores seems to change with each year Yet we we know that the movie database contains approximately 200 movies from every year. Given this information, why do you think metascores are so high for older movies? ANSWER HERE: A negative correlation implies that movies were better on average in the past than they are now Do you think this data supports that idea, or can you construct an alternative explanation for the apparent correlation that doesn't depend on actual changes in movie quality.

Explanation / Answer

AMSWER:

a) A linear line can be used to fit the dataset. However, as the correlation is not that strong, this wouldn't be a good fit.

b) After 1980, the number of movies given meta score increases abruptly, with the range of meta score also increasing.

After 2000, the number of movies given meta score increase more than that in 1980, but the meta score doesn't increase.

c) Meta score is high for older movies as all the movies in a year before were not given meta score, only those above a threshold of 50 qualified for meta scoring

d) No a negative correlation doesn't imply that movie in past was better than that of now. As the number of movies with high meta score is approximately same for each year, which suggests good movies are produced throughout the time. Since with greater number of movies produced each year or being given meta score the average meta score has come down.

We can assume a threshold meta score of 50 for a movie to be plotted in the graph and then can comment on the quality of the movie.
