Question

The following research studies consist of two or more groups of scores being compared. For each, decide whether the study is experimental or non experimental, and then identify the dependent, independent, or quasi-independent variables. Fourth-grade classrooms in several elementary schools are randomly assigned to differed antibullying training programs at the beginning of the school year. The school district keeps track of the number of incidents of bullying in each classroom. This study is an example of an experimental study. The type of training program is the independent variable. The number of incidents of bullying is the dependent variable. Researchers at a medical school conducted a study to test the effectiveness of a new treatment for lung cancer. Of the 128 lung cancer patients in an affiliated hospital, 94 volunteered for the new treatment, while the remaining 34 decked and underwent traditional treatment instead. The survival rates for the two treatment groups were measured after 12 months. This study is an example of an experimental study. Whether a patient survives after 12 months is the dependent variable. The type of lung cancer treatment is the independent variable.

Explanation / Answer

In both cases, there is an independent variable - training program in the first case and treatment in the second. They control or manipulate the behavior of the dependent variable - number of bullying incidents and survivability after 12 months respectively.

As a result both are experimental researches.

All answers are correct.
