Problem 4 (a) A radio wave sent from the surface of the earth reflects from the surface of the moon and returns to the earth. The elapsed time between the generation of the wave and the detection of the reflected wave is 2.6444 s. Determine the distance from the surface of the earth to the surface of the moon. Note: The speed of light is 2.9979 × 10m/s. (b) An FM radio station generates radio waves that have a frequency of 95.5 MHz. The frequency of the waves from a competing station have a frequency of 102.7 MHz. What is the difference in wavelength between the waves emitted from the two stations? Note: speed of light is 3 x 10(8) m/s. (c)Which one has the largest frequency? ((b) visible light (a) X-rays (c) radio waves (d) gamma rays (d) A guitar string has a linear density of 8.30 × 10 ^(-4) kg/m and a length of 0.660 m. The tension in the string is 52.0 N. What is the fundamental frequency of the string?

Explanation / Answer

a)We know that,

speed = distance/time

distance = speed x time

the time given is the one taken for entire trip. So time for on reaching the moon will be:

t = 2.644/2 = 1.322 s

distance = d = vt

d = 2.9979 x 10^8 x 1.322 = 3.9632238 x 10^8 m

Hence, d = 3.9632238 x 10^8 m

b)we know that,

v = f lambda => lambda = v/f

lambda1 = 3 x 10^8/95.5 = 3.14 x 10^6 m

lambda2 = 3 x 10^8/102.7 = 2.91 x 10^6 m

delta lambda = lambda2 - lambda1

delta lambda = (3.14 - 2.91) x 10^6 = 2.3 x 10^5 m

Hence, delta-lambda = 2.3 x 10^5 m

c)(d)Gamma rays

d)u = 8.3 x 10^-4 ; L = 0.66 m ; T = 52 N

frequency is given by:

f = sqrt (T/(m/L)/2L)

f = sqrt(52/8.3 x 10^-4)/2 x 0.66 = 189.62 Hz

Hence, f = 189.62 Hz
