Question

Part II – Subway

You run a subway. Look at “Her.xlsx”. This has data on how many people get on and off each stop. For instance, in total, 259 people get on at Times Square (the sum of row 5), and 30 get off at 34th street, 40 get off at 28th street, and so on. Also, in total, 165 people are getting off on Canal. This is a southbound train and runs only in one direction (starting at Times Square).

Assume 50 people fit on a train car. How many southbound train cars to you need to carry all the people at the route’s most crowded? Turn in 2 versions of your spreadsheet. Remember, you spreadsheet should be flexible enough that if new data comes to light, you can easily type this new data in the spreadsheet and the number of subway cars will be automatically updated.

You may find of use a function called “CEILING.MATH” to convert the fractional number of subway cars needed into whole cars. Use google or Excel help to learn about this function. (“FLOOR.MATH” is its complement).

Explanation / Answer

Answer -

Calculate the following -

Make sure passengers in the train at Rector street comes out equal to passengers that get down at South Ferry.

Then the Train cars required at it's most crowded point is - 24 for sheet 1

Similarily for sheet 2, just copy paste the value in the excel sheet with formulae -

And number of train cars required is calculated as - 478
