Question
The report Progress for Children" (UNICEF, Agril 2005) incuded the accompanying dsta on the percentage of primary-schooHage children who were enrolled in schoal for 54 34.3 48.9 77.8 59.6 83.5 97.4 92 5 83.9 959 88.9 8.8 91.6 97.8 96192.2 94.9 6 86.6 83 34.6 35.5 43.4 38.6 3.8 539 619 69.9 43.0 850 63.4 S8.4 61.9 40.9 73.9 34.8 74.4 97.4 61.0 79.6 98.9 We will construct a comparative scem-and-leal display using the fest digit of each observation as the stem and the remaining two digits as the leaf. To keep the dsplay simple the eaves wil be truncated to one digit. For eample, teobservation 54.6 wouid be processed as 54.6 sem-5, leaf . 4 (truncated from 4.6), the observation 65.7 would be processed as (truncated from 6.7) and the observation 77.8 wouid be processed as truncated from 7.8). The resultng comparative stem-and-leaf display is shown in the fgure below. Central Affica 4854 131 943 776 Stem Te Cemperative stem-and-leaf display for percertage of dieren enrolied in prmary schoel. From the comparative stem-and-lea display we can see that there is quite a bit of veriablity in the percentage enroled in school for both Northern and Central African counaries different. The percentage enrolled in s to be higher in countres, although the smallest volue in each of the two data sets is bout the same For Northern African countries the dstribution of values has singe peak n the 90s wth the number of observations deciing as we move toward the stems corresponding to lower percontages evroled in school. Far Cenvtral Adricen countries the distibution is more symmetric, wth typical value in the mid 60 Now many individual stem-and-lea displays are represented by the cemparative stem-and-leaf dapiayExplanation / Answer
The observation 66.7 will be represented as
66.7 --> Stem = 6, leaf = 6 (Truncated from 6.7)
The observation 77.8 will be represented as
77.8 --> Stem = 7, leaf = 7 (Truncated from 7.8)
