Question

A sample of 26 offshore ol workers took part in a simulated escape exercise, resulting in the accompanying data on time (sec) to complete the escape: 383 350 356 362 379 422 323 397 403 372 375 370 363 367 365 325 338 394 93 369 376 358 354 407 332 398 (a) Construct a stem-and-leaf display of the data. (Enter numbers from smallest to largest separated by spaces. Enter NONE for stems with no values.) Stems Leaves 32 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 How does it suggest that the sample mean and median will compare? O The display is negatively skewed, so the median will be greater than the mean. O The display is positively skewed, so the median will be greater than the mean. O The display is positively skewed, so the mean will be greater than the median. O The display is negatively skewed, so the mean will be greater than the median.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Stem-and-Leaf Display: data

Stem-and-leaf of data N = 26
Leaf Unit = 1.0

   32 35
   33 28
   34
   35 0468
   36 23579
   37 02569
   38 3
   39 3478
   40 37
   41
   42 2

Now the display is negatively skewed,so mean will be greater than median.

b) sample mean= 370.42 & sample median=369.50

c) now since 422 is the largest value,so as we go on increasing the largest value it wont affect the median value. So infinity is the limit.

now since median is the mean/average of the 13th and 14th observation in the sorted data,so if we decrease the maximum value i.e 422 till 370 then median will remain same. If it is decreased below 370 then the median will change.

d) When the data is reexpressed in minutes, mean becomes=6.1737 & median becomes =6.1583.
