Question

Plinko is a classic game featured on the hit game show The Price is Right. The objective of the game is to drop cylindrical discs into slots and win as much money as possible. Your grandmother has been watching the game show religiously for the last 20 years and has collected data on what slot each contestant drops his/her disc in as well as the resulting monetary value. Assume a total of 270 discs have been dropped equally between each slot. The table below lists the slot at the top of the board from left to right (e.g looking at the board, the far left is 1 and the far right is 9) and the number of times the disc has landed in the 10,000 dollar slot. Using this empirical data, what is the probability of winning 10,000 dollars using the "best" two slots? Enter your answer in the boxes below as decimals rounded to the nearest thousandth, if necessary, such as 0.4 or 0.239 Best Second best = Slot

Explanation / Answer

<As per answering guidelines, answering the first question. If you need answer to all of them please re-post the 2nd and 3rd ques as seperate questions>

We have the data on the slot number and number of times the disc has reached 10,000 dollars spot.

A total of 270 times the disc was throws, equally in the 9 slots. So each slot received 270/9 = 30 throws.

Out of 30 throws the number of times it reached 10,000 mark is shown. We divide the number of times it reached 10,000 by 30 to obtain the probability of the disc reaching 10,000 from that slot.

The highest prob is for Slot 5 and then by Slot 1.

So best shot is Slot 5: Prob of 0.27 and second best shot is slot 1 with prob. of 0.2.

Starting Slot Number of times reached 10,000 Probability of reaching 10,000 1 6 0.20 2 2 0.07 3 1 0.03 4 5 0.17 5 8 0.27 6 4 0.13 7 3 0.10 8 5 0.17 9 3 0.10
