In 1969, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) conducted a survey of civilian respondents who had been in the military during World War II. At the time of entry into the military, volunteers had to passa battery of aptitude tests. In the NBER study, the researchers wanted to explore the predictive ability of these aptitude tests (Aptitude) with regards to vocational success (Occupation) and if respondents' educational level (Education) mediated this relationship. The following describes the different levels of each of the variables: Occupational level 01: self-employed, business A1: low E1: low 02: self-employed, professional A2 03: teacher 04: salaried, employed Aptitude Educational level A3 A4 A5: high E2 E3 E4: highExplanation / Answer
Firstly, a clustered bar chart do not indicate the causal relation between Occupation and aptitude level. It just shows the count of people in different categories and re;lative ranking between them.
Here only 2 groups are populated densely, O1 and O4. The other 2 occupation groups are sparsely populated so we should not draw inference from them due to small sample error effect.
In O1, we find that mosrt number of people are in Aptitude 3 level and that is also the case in O4. This trend of A3 > A2 > A1 > A4 >A5 is observed across O1 and O4 across all education panels. This indicates that Aptitude is not detrimental in determining the success in an occupation. Because whatever the Occupation be the shape of the aptitude curve is remaining the same. Had there been some effect then O4 will have high aptitude people indicating that people with high aptitude go for O4 but that is not the case here.
