Question

Descriptive Statistics Using only the descriptive statistics provided, answer the following questions. Note, the scores are in a response to a 5-point Likert- type scale. Example 1: Mean-3.45Median=3.42 SD=.40 Describe the distribution of the data. Is this sample normally distributed, positively skewed, or negatively skewed? Why? What two scores do 95.44% of the data fall between? Example 2: Mean-4.00 Median-3.60 Describe the distribution of the data. Is this sample normally distributed, positively skewed, or negatively skewed? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Example 1 :

Mean = 3.45 , Median = 3.42 , Standard deviation = 0.4

As mean > Median then The distribution is rightly or positively skewed.

the two scores that 95.44% of values will fall in between these values are two standard deviation away.

So values are

Lower value = Mean - 2 * standard deviation = 3.45 - 2 * 0.40 = 2.65

Upper value = Mean + 2 * standard deviation = 3.45 + 2 * 0.40 = 4.25

So, the values are in between (2.65, 4.25)

Exapmle 2:

Here mean = 4.00 , median = 3.60

as mean is very high than median then distribution of the data is not normally distributed. the distribution of the data can be said postive skewed.
