Question #8 (10 pts.) write your answer on this sheet. Begin your solution on a mew page in your examination book.) The picture on the right is a digital multimeter (DMM similar to the ones that you may have purchased when you entered the EE program at UWB. The meter can be connected to a laptop PC with a USB cable and with the included software, make automated measurements. Shown below is a close-up photo of the connector on the top of the DMM where the USB cable connection to the PC is made. RS232 OPTICAL PORT Notice that next to the connector is the words "OPTICAL PORT." This means that the communications link between the meter and the PC is an optical coupling instead of electrical. Write a brief paragraph or so explaining the reason for the use of an optical port to connect the DMM and the PC.Explanation / Answer
Dear Student,
The main purpose of using light signals rather than electrical signals in the communications is that - Electrical signals are easily susceptible to external noise that is noise gets entered into the signals which is not the case with Light Signals.
Hence we go for Optical communication where we use Light Signals for communication rather than electrical signals.
In this case also, DMM is external to the PC where we are measuring the parameters and the corresponding output is an Electrical signal which must go to PC via USB where there is a chance of introduction of noise signals into the electrical signals. Hence in this case we use Optical communication for the system to be immune from Noise signals.
Thank You. Have a Nice Day.
