Instruction Answer All The Questions. Question 1 An artidle reported a data from an experiment investigating the effect of several process variables on the vapour phase oxidation of naphthalene. Suppose that the percentage mole conversion of naphthalene to maleic anhydride is normally distributed. A sample of the percentage mole conversion of naphthalene to maleic anhydride is given as follows: 4.2 4.7 3.8 3.0 3.1 4.8 5.2 2.8 2. 4.8 4.7 5.0 3.6 5.1 3.8 4.0 4.3 2.03.3 5.0 a) Calculate the sample mean and the sample standard deviation. b) Construct a box plot 7 marks]

Explanation / Answer

In Excel we can find mean and standard deviation , for that first we have to plug givn data in one column of Excel .

Suppose we plug data in column A from A1 to A20

Then plug function for mean as   = AVERAGE ( A1 :A20 )   and hit Enter , it gives you answer as mean = 4 .

For standard deviation , function is :   = STDEV (A1:A20) and hit Enter , it gives standard deviation = 0.93076

Now we have to draw box plot for given data , for that we need to find minimum , Q1, Q2, Q3 and maximum value

for given data set .

We have to use function as : QUARTILE ( array , quart)
For minimum as : QUARTILE (A1 :A20 , 0) = 2

For Q1 : QUARTILE ( A1 : A20 , 1) = 3.25

For Q2 : QUARTILE ( A1 : A20 , 2) = 4.1

For Q3 : QUARTILE ( A1 : A20 , 3) = 4.8

For maximum : QUARTILE ( A1 : A20 , 4) = 5.2

Now we can plot box plot as :
