If the sample had truly been a random sample, what percentage of women would you expect to have been in the sample? 2. Name at least one error you'd expect this survey to suffer from, even if all 15.9 million college and university students in the United States had answered, not just 5,000. 3. 201 BEYOND THE NUMBERS 2.26Explanation / Answer
a) The variablility in the data due to different samples chosen is termed as 'sampling variablility' or sampling variance or Sampling error.
b) For a truly random sample, the percentage of women in the sample should have been nearly same as the percentage of women attending university. That means they should be equal to the actual proportion in the population.A simple random sample is meant to be an unbiased representation of a group. I would expect 20% of the women.
c) The only reason for getting an erroneous answer even after sampling so many students, is the RESPONSE BIAS, wherein the participants potentially hide the correct information in order to avoid embarassment etc.
Response bias is a general term for a wide range of cognitive biasesthat influence the responses of participants away from an accurate or truthful response. These biases are most prevalent in the types of studies and research that involve participant self-report, such as structured interviews or surveys. Response bias or survey bias is the tendency of a person to answer questions on a survey untruthfully or misleadingly
