Question
Two analytical techniques were used to determine the percent of ethanol in gasoline.The percentages of ethanol det with an standard deviation(uncertainity) of ±0.89% for the first technique for the second technique. ermined were 9.95% and 10.52% with an standard deviation(uncertainty) of ±0.55% If you are asked to compare these values to determine which analytical technique is better, How would you do it? What information would you use to determine which technique is more precise? Why? What information would you use to determine which tochnique is more accurate?Explanation / Answer
Technique-1:
% of Ethanol= 9.95%
SD= 0.89%
Range of Measurements= (9.95-0.89, 9.95+0.89)= (9.06, 10.84)
Technique-2:
% of Ethanol= 10.52%
SD= 0.55%
Range of Measurements= (10.52-0.55, 10.52+0.55)= (9.97, 11.07)
To compare both the techniques, we should compare the Standard Deviation of both the techniques and based on that, we need to take a call on which one is more reliable.
SD is often regarded as the margin for error component and when it comes to comparing techniques, we should choose the one with lower tolerance for error.
In Technique-1, as the SD is higher, the range of values are more compared to Technique-2
So, Technique-2 is more preferred as it gives us less scope for measurements away from the Mean.
Low SD= More Clustered= High Reliability
