Question
Please do parts a and b. 5. If you complete all six pages on all 16 homework assignments (ignoring HW1) this term, you will have worked 96 sides of statistics problems. Add on the two midterms (4 sides each) and final (usually 8 sides) and this gives 112 sides of problems in roughly 10 weeks! You might be curious how the number of pages of work in a course (xaxis) relates to the average self-reported amount learned by students (y axis) a. Suppose you collected data (number of pages of work assigned, average amount learned as reported by students) on many different classes at UCSD. Give a reason why the scatterplot of these data might resemble a function that increases and then decreases b. Suppose that the increasing part of the scatterplot follows the picture below Learning vs. Amount of Homework in Several Courses 20 40 80 100 120 Num pages assigned in course Estimate three things using this picture: The correlation, the slope of the regression line, and the y intercept of the regression line. What are the units on each idea?
Explanation / Answer
Solution
Part (a)
It is normally expected that home work enhances quantum of learning. Due to this phenomenon, as the number of pages of work assigned increases, average amount learned also increases explaining why the scatter plot exhibits an upward trend in the early part. But, then there is a saturation point beyond which the work assigned becomes too much for the student to cope with resulting in a downturn in the learning process. Thus, the scatter resembles a decreasing function thereafter. ANSWER 1
Part (b)
The given scatter plot shows a clear upward trend which is also steady. Thus, + 0.8 would be a good estimate of the correlation coefficient. ANSWER 2
An imaginary straight line which could represent the relationship as shown by the scatter plot, would possibly pass through the point (0, 2) at the left extremity and (120, 9) at the right extremity suggesting a slope of around 0.06 ANSWER 3 and
a y-intercept of 2. ANSWER 4
