Problem 12-2 The following table lists the components needed to assemble an end item, lead times, and quantities on hand. Item LT (wk) Amount on hand End B 3 3 3 3 0 9 1024 10 28 5O End Item B (2) D (3) E (2) F(3) G (2) E 2) H 4)E2 a. If 19 units of the end item are to be assembled, how many additional units of E are needed? (Hint. You don't need to develop an MRP plan to determine this.) Additional units b. An order for the end item is scheduled to be shipped at the start of week 14. What is the latest week that the order can be started and still be ready to ship on time? (Hint You don't need to develop an MRP plan for this part either) The latest week

Explanation / Answer

2 units of B are required for each unit of end item & 2 units of E are required for each unit of item B

Therefore , number of E items required for each unit of end item = 2 x 2 = 4

1 unit of item C is required for each unit of end item and 2 units of item E required for each unit of item C .

Therefore, number of E items required for each unit of end item = 1 x 2 = 2

1 unit of end item requires 3 units of item D and each unit of D requires 2 units of item E

Therefore, number of item E items required for each unit of end item = 3 x 2 = 6

Therefore , total number of E items required for each unit of end item ( as calculated above )

= 4 + 2 + 6

= 12 units

Therefore , gross number of item E required for 19 end items = 19 x 12 = 228

Number of item E at hand = 10

Therefore, additional number of item E required = 228 – 10 = 218

ADDITIONAL UNITS = 218

Maximum lead time gap between end item and item E

= Lead time item C /D + Lead time E

= 3 + 1

= 4 weeks

Maximum lead time gap between end item and item F

= Lead time item C /D + Lead time F

= 3 + 3

= 6 weeks

Maximum lead time gap between end item and item G

= Lead time item C /D + Lead time G

= 3 + 1

= 4 weeks

Maximum lead time gap between end item and item H

= Lead time item C /D + Lead time H

= 3 + 3

= 6 weeks

As derived from above, maximum gap in lead time between end item and an input item = 6 weeks

End item is scheduled to be shipped = Start of week 14

Therefore , latest week when order can be started = 14 – 6 = week 8

THE LATEST WEEK = WEEK 6

ADDITIONAL UNITS = 218
