Question

Choose Your Research Design (pp. 28-31, 33-39) 1. An investigator is interested in studying whether infant child care leads to an insecure attachment bond between children and their mothers during the first year of life as well as into the preschool years. a. What research method and design would you choose for this study? Why? I would chose observational study. We can define our target variable for measurements as binary response from mothers wbether they relies the weakening bonding with children. b. Would the results tell you anything about cause and effeet? Why or why not? c. Would this study involve any special ethical considerations? If so, what are they? 2. An investigator is interested in studying whther a newrg is as effective as diet and exercise in lowering cholesterol levels in an adult sample. a. What research method and design would you choose for this study? Why? I would chose experimental study. By dividing the population of adults into two. One on drugs and the others on no drugs, only diet & exercise. Would the results tell you anything about cause and effecr? Why or why not? b. c. Would this study involve any special ethical considerations? If so, what are they? 3. An investigator is interested in determining whether sociability in children is related to school achievement and whether this relationship, if any, varies for children in preschool, elementary school, and middle school. a. What research method and design would you chose for this study? Why? b. Would the results tell you anything about cause and effect? Why or why not? Would this study involve any special ethical considerations? If so, what are they? c.

Explanation / Answer

Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary.

(Answer) (1) (a) Observational method of case studies through questionnaires answered by mothers. This would help determine the empirical value of the observation. Furthermore, the results would be determined by the correlation coefficient, as it would be a concise method for this type of a study.

(b) Since the study is observational and measured on correlation, it would be heavily dependent on the causal relationship between the dependent and independent variables. Although, the only possible flaw in the research would be a confounding variable. Since this will be done through a questionnaire, the confounding variable would be easy to spot and consider the final result.

(c) Considering that the parent would have to disclose private information about the child, their personal and the child’s temperament and other such information, it would need a confidentiality agreement. Furthermore, the parents could be obliged to provide answers on a “Likert scale”, in case they wouldn’t be comfortable giving out extraneous details.

(2) (a) Experimental study of a control group and an experimental group. One that received the drug and one that exercises and diets. This is because the effects would be best visible if there are two opposite groups.

(b) The results would be based on cause and effect. Cause of the drug or diet/ work out and the effect on the cholesterol. Any change from the previous life of the subject would be the result of the new variable which would be the drug or the diet.

(c) Consideration of the subject’s medical history or any other dietary requirements would need to be respected. Furthermore, the subjects would need to consent to the ethical administration of the drug or diet/work out. Also, the subjects should be entitled to know about any developments or new information about the drugs if any.

(3) (a) Observational – This is because; the variable would already be presented in the form of empirical values through the students’ report cards. The other variable in question would be the sociability of the children. Furthermore, based on the results of the study, the researchers may have to notice differences in the syllabi of the elementary and other schools. This would be to determine whether or not sociability and other factors like difficulty level also contribute to the child’s performance.

(b) The study is a direct analysis of cause and effect. Therefore, it would succinctly point out the relationship between the variables.

(c) Again, a confidentiality agreement between students or their guardians and a full disclosure of the purpose of the study. Also, permits from the school and the parents would need to be arranged for the sake of the study.
