Questions

The Ecological Model, also called the Social Ecological Model, focuses on both population-level and individual-level determinants of health and interventions. Because significant and dynamic interrelationships exist among these different levels of health determinants, interventions are most likely to be effective when they address determinants at all levels.

Question 1) List the 5 components/levels of an ecological model described in the video.

Question 2) Provide an example from your own life on a how you think a specific factor impacted your health and wellbeing. Explain what component of the Ecological Model it would fit under and why. (3-4 sentences)

For example, I might describe how the availability of recreational facilities in my neighborhood helped me to stay active as a child. This would fit under a Community level component of the Ecological Model because these facilities were designed to be accessible for all children within my community.

Question 3) The promotion and encouragement of breastfeeding between mothers and newborns can help to increase the number of moms who breastfeed and how long they breastfeed their infant. One intervention to promote breastfeeding is known as the "Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative," which assists hospitals in giving all mothers the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies or feeding formula safely, and gives special recognition to hospitals that have done so. What component or components does this intervention fit under in the ecological model? Justify why.

Explanation / Answer

1. The five levels of ecological model are as follows:

Individual (intrapersonal) factors

Interpersonal factors

Institutional (Community) Factors

Socio economic factors

Political Factors

2. At an interpersonal level the presence of my mother and her undying support made me into a benevolent and compassionate person, and our strenuous life conditions, along with that, made me into a pragmatic and resilient individual. This has impacted my personal well being at an individual level.

3. This specific act/activity fits neatly under the umbrella of the institution and community factor level, as the institution of hospitals are taking it as an initiative to spread the message pertaining to public health and well being, and it is an intervention that is taking place a community level, which would create an impact on the societal level.
