Question

I would like to take religion out of the picture for a moment in order to get to the root of dissonance. When we consider morality, each of us may have a slightly different compass. If you were to engage in behavior that may be at odds with your moral compass, for example, taking someone's parking spot, cheating on a test, how would you resolve this dissonance? How does the level of dissonance figure into the resolution? Take a look at the following resource: https://prezi.com/ypxsjgn5gvva/the-role-of-morality-in-cognitive-dissonance/ Thoughts?

Explanation / Answer

When we engage in actions that we consider as ethically incorrect, we commit it after evaluating the basic pros and cons of the situation and that when we feel that there is less chances of being caught in the act. For example, cheating is more when there's an opportunity to cheat without being caught, that is when we feel comfortable that we will not be held accountable for our behaviors by others and be judged by them. The resolution for this dissonance is figured by our rationality that it was beneficial for us, it was non malignant, our actions didn't posothers, any other person in our place would have done the same etc. We thus, find resolutions for the unethical acts to resolve our dissonance and keep up our unethical acts whenever we get chances.
