Question
Can someone please give me an example, I'm confused with this assignemnt. thank you!
As the text explains, there are two perspectives, outward focused and inner focused. Those locked into an external focus display limited self-control, focusing more on their own fear or complacency to avoid change. In social settings, these same individuals choose to undermine or demean others around them (especially those who make them feel intimidated or anyone they may not understand) to falsely build themselves up. The problem is, as soon as this feeling of superiority fades, they seek another target (person) to demean to restore the feeling of control. This constant push for external validation not only leaves a wake of destruction but causes more harm to the individual because of the reinforced learned helplessness.
From the outside, the choice of taking an inner focused perspective rather than an outward focused may seem easy. Here lies the ethical conundrum, you must be willing to be uncomfortable (sometimes very uncomfortable) to make the ethical decision. Those who have an inner focused perspective are not afraid of change and, the more they continue to hold to their values, the easier ethical decision making becomes. This is because the discomfort comes from putting priority over inner focused perspective rather than external comforts.
We all have fallen short and put ourselves first before our own values and ethics. (1) Describe a situation where you were too afraid of making the uncomfortable decision to make the right ethical decision; (2) What rationalization did you have to compel you not to make the ethical decision?; (3) What were the consequences of your decision?; and (4) What did you learn from this experience?
Explanation / Answer
Once we went on a picnic to a riverside village. There were many people visiting the river and some people were bathing and someone was carried away by the water current. I am a very good swimmer and have experience swimming against the current. No on noticed this person being carried away by the current as I was taking a stroll on the river bank.
I thought for a while determining what I should do. I quickly ran the implications of my actions and decided not to jump on the water but called the emergency services with the location. By the time they came, it was already late that the person had almost drowned but he was lucky enough to be alive.
I felt very bad for not helping him immediately because I was very selfish in deciding not to help him. My decision should have killed that person. I didn't sleep for few days and later I decided that helping someone is my moral responsibility. I also decided that I shouldn't put my interests first before a dying person.
