What is Hume's view on the relationship between impressions and ideas? What does it lead Hume to say about material substance and the self? Compare and contrast Berkeley's view of material substance with Hume's view of material substance.

Explanation / Answer

According to Hume perception is divided into impression and ideas.

Difference between impression and ideas is made by difference of forcefulness and vivacity.

Impressions - Relates to feelings ,they are more lively and vivid

Impression are 1. of sensation and 2.of reflection

Impressions of sensation are derived from our senses

Impressions of reflection are derived from experience of our mind.

Ideas - Relate to thinking ,they are less lively and less vivid.

Ideas are faint copies of impressions, they are less forcible and less lively.

Humes view on material substance- According to Hume he is confused about material substance and it's identity. Substance is the idea of physical object as something that exists independently of our experience in it's own right and in three dimensional space, this does not fits humes decsription of an idea.Hume belives that since substance and material cannot be derived from impressions(perception) and since they cannot be demonstrated by proof it cannot be known to exist.

Humes view on self- Bundle of thoughts and perceptions constantly and rapidly changing. It is all that we have experience of.

Humes agrees with Bercleys that we cannot justifiably make a distinction between primary and secondary qualities of perception but humes disagrees about God as universal mind controlling those perception.

Also humes and berkleys views are contrasting in case of material substance , according to humes substance does not exist if it is not perceived while Berkeley believe that material substance has it's existence even if it is not perceived by the senses eg. God.
