Question
The department's only receptionist, who answers all phones in the department, was in a car accident and hurt her back. Her physician has provided you with a copy of her medical records and has scheduled her for physical therapy for the next month every day from 2-5 pm. Your coaches are all involved in team practices at this time so they are not available to answer their phones. The Dr. has indicated that he is not sure if the one month of physical therapy will be enough to completely heal the receptionist's back and that he will update you after the first month of physical therapy. o a. What type of accommodation is being requested? [1 points] o b. Do you grant the requested accommodation? [1 points ° c. why or why not? [5 points]Explanation / Answer
Ans a) The receptionist is seeking Non-tech reasonable accomodation under Americans with Disability Act (ADA) by the medium of extra medical leave for entire period of one month or half day leave in case she reports to work and then leaves for her physical therapy scheduled between 2-5pm.
b) Yes, I would grant this requested accomodation.
c) Yes, since she is a dedicated and sincere employee, I would grant the requested accomodation. I will distribute the load for some time. This will provide her with ample time to fully recover and be more resourceful to the organization. Moreover, it does not involve any cost or expenditure, nor is it a threat to other employees. There is going to to be no disruption in the work flow. Neither will it lead to any change in the nature of business. There are no grounds for me to terminate her or deny her this accomodation. Else, it goes beyond the principle of empathy towards fellow beings. Once, she reports back to work, I would re-design her work to ensure less work load and less number of desk hours in order to avoid any kind of work-related strain for a few months.
