Question
After the first month of school, Mr. Lennox places a suggestion box in his classroom and encourages students to drop suggestions anonymously into the box. He opens the box at the end of the week and reads a note suggesting that he stop lecturing. The student says that lectures put him or her to sleep.
Mr. Lennox wants students to learn history. He realizes the value of the declarative knowledge he is presenting, and he wants it to hold meaning for his students. Mr. Lennox shows you the suggestion and asks for recommendations. As his colleague, you are in a position to help.
What, besides lecturing, might Mr. Lennox do in his teaching to help students create semantic memory of historical events?
What might Mr. Lennox do in his teaching to help students create episodic memory of historical events?
Explanation / Answer
Semantic Memory:- it comprises our knowledge and information related to the world. Episodic Memory:- it is the memory related to our personal affairs like name, qualification, date of birth and personal experiences. This memory is connected with episodes of events. It is a record of what happened to us, our remembrance of past things. Mr. Lennox could develop the mental picture of the learning situation. Always create visual images which come to our memory picture He can apply whole and part method. One is to read the chapter again and again from the beginning till the end as a whole. This is called the whole method of memorizing. In the other method, part method- the chapter is divided into parts and each part is memorized separately. Utilizing as many senses as possible:- senses are said to be the gateway of knowledge and always use audio-visual aids and receive impressions through as many senses as possible. A calm and quiet atmosphere stimulates learning and improves memory He could enhance memory of students by various activities like role-playing, different games etc He can utilize various teaching-learning methodology like problem-based learning, debates, an interaction between students, conducting seminars, displaying information on flannel charts, bulletin boards. He can take feedback from students in form of tests Episodic memory can be improved by assigning students various tasks such as collecting images and pictures of various historical events, acting their roles. He can plan some field visit (Eg- historical palaces, museums, monuments etc) so that students can easily encode the details which they will go through over the visits. He can plan various group activities and groups shall be a mixture of good and weak students in academics so that he can identify weak students. He can tell the students to use Mnemonics. this word comes from Greek word ‘nemoniks’ which means assisting the memory. These are memory improvement techniques rely on the linking or association of, to be remembered material with a systematic and organized set of images or words which serve as remainder cues called memory pegs. Method of Loci:- the word loci means places. The memory peg in this system are parts of your image of a scene, which can be a street, tree, building etc. Make a story:- make a story of unrelated items. So that remembering a story is very easy. Eg- journey taken up by you and places visited etc. Chunking:- it is a very systematic way of encoding information.Eg- if we want to remember a list of long digits for eg. years in history, then break them into pieces or digits. Follow the principle of association:- we must try to connect or relate whatever we learn with what we have already learned well. Give proper rest to students in between the classes. Avoid emotional disturbances. Maintain physical and mental health well
