Question

For the following types of memory (procedural, semantic and episodic) do the following: 1. Define it 2. List as implicit or explicit 3. Come up with a personal example of that type of memory 4. Imagine that you have had your hippcampus removed or damaged. Would this type of memory be intact? Be specific and include any potential differences between anterograde and retrograde memory loss for each type of memory. Please make sure you answer 1-4 for ALL 3 of the types of memory listed above: procedural, semantic and episodic Use the lecture notes and book to help you understand the differences and what happens to amnesiacs. Refer to the H.M. section of book and notes to help you if you aren't sure where to start.

Explanation / Answer

1.

Procedural memory- Procedural memory is a part of long term memory. It is knowing of how to do things and involve motor skills.

Semantic memory- This is a part of declarative memory of long term memory. It is associated with general information of the world as facts, ideas, concepts, meaning etc.

Episodic memory- Episodic memory is also a part of declarative memory of the long term memory. It is associated with storing memories of past experiences in episodes or as events.

2.

Procedural memory is an implicit memory or unconscious memory while both episodic and semantic memory requires a conscious effort to remember, hence, are explicit memory.

3.

Examples of procedural memory includes typing at keyboard once an individual gets habituated to it, writing, cooking, eating, walking etc

Examples of semantic memory are remembering names of days, friends, remembering the way to park, remembering the concept of memory etc.

Examples of semantic memory are remembering the experience of first day at college or office, remembering the event of your marriage, remembering the experience of your childhood days etc.

4. Removal of hippocampus involves antegrade amnesia that is new memories are prevented from being formed and the declarative memory that is semantic and episodic memory is adversely effected by it. The removal of hippocampus do not effect the implicit procedural memory.
