Question

In Book One of the Nicomechean Ethics, Aristotle argues that the highest end for human beings is happiness (eudaimonia) which he defines as “human flourishing.” But how does Aristotle define human flourishing? Are there any difficulties in knowing whether someone is flourishing? Why does Aristotle argue that lives devoted to pleasure, fame, or money are not legitimate conceptions of human flourishing? Do you agree? Why or why not? Finally, why do you think it is important for the flourishing life that a student take a course in ethical theories and, more generally, be required to take a number of courses in the Liberal Studies Program?
