Please answer all questions, A B C and D!

5. Use the diagram below from Silverthorn to answer the following questio a) What type of transport is happening at ? b) What type of transport is happening at ? c) What type of transport is happening at ? 0 d) Assuming that this is an absorptive cell in the duodenum, explain how a drug that disables the Na/K ATPase would affect the absorption of water and why. Make sure to state whether transport would increase or decrease and provide an explanation for the change.

Explanation / Answer

In case of 1, secondary active transport is taking place. In secondary active transport two molecules are transported with the help of a carrier protein.

In case of 2, facilitated diffusion is atking place.

In case of 3, active transport is taking place.

if a drug disables Na+/K+ ATPase, it will stop the aborption of water . Water gets absorbed due to the high osmotic gradient produced by sodium , so if the sodium potassium pump stops working ,movement of sodium will be affected which will affect aborption of water in the small intestine.
