Karvonen formula helps to determine mathemathically the heart rate zone.
The formula can be written as; Heart rate= ( Max. heart rate - resting heart rate) x % intensity + resting heart rate.
Maximum heart rate is taken as 220.
As the client wants to put some size and muscle therefore the % intensity of the exercise falls in the range of 60 - 70 %.
Age = 27.
Resting heart rate = 60
Minimum intensity = 60%
Maximum intensity = 70 %
So putting the values in the Karvonen formula;
For minimum training heart rate:
220 - 27 (age) =193.
193 - 60 = 133.
133 x 0. 60 (min.intensity) + 60 =139.8 beats/minute.
For maximum training heart rate:
220 - 27 =193.
193 -60 = 133
133 x 0.70 (max. intensity) + 60 = 153.1 beats/minute.
Therefore, the heart rate zone is 139.8 -153.1 beats/minute.
