Question

Maximal aerobic capacity (V02max) measurements may differ based on which protocol is used and based on what units are used to report V02max. Describe two athletes one that you'd expect to perform well on the cycle ergometer and one that would perform well on the treadmill. In addition, describe two individuals who would have a higher V02max estimate with each of the V02max units - L/min and ml/kg/min. athletes such as basketball player, soccer, baseball etc..any sport that you would think would perform best in a cycle ergometer or treadmill.

Explanation / Answer

Ans. Maximal aerobic capacity is the maximum amount of oxygen which can be consumed during any increamental excercise. The factors which play a decisive role in VO2 max are age, stress, fitness and training, change in attitude and action of ventillatory muscles. If we consider the example of two athletes a football player and basketball player maximum aerobic capacity is observed. Hence on comparison the football players would perform well on the cycle ergometer and treadmill.

Football player 20-36 mL/kg/min

Basket ball player 18-30 mL/kg/min
